General Information for Skyros
Skyros the picturesque island of the Sporades - despite its proximity to Evia and Athens-had until recently,due to lack of funds,remained traditional and non-conformist. In recent years it has been discovered, however, by many -Europeans and Americans in addition to Athenians - who find Skyros an ideal place for meditation and reflection. It is an island deep-rooted to tradition, history and myth. It is closely tied to the Trojan War. It was here - from the Achilli Bay - that Achilleus, the Greek warrior, set off for Troy - findings testify to the glory of the past. The southern island of the Sporades - across from Evia , with which is joined through Kyme - offers beautiful wide sandy beaches and welcomes the visitor to spend quiet, peaceful holidays at a place which is a living museum. You discover that if you take a walk through the uphill back streets and enter some houses with the remains of beautifully carved furniture, memories of a period when the Skyrians lived a more comfortable life via the sea. Skyros is known for the woodcarved furniture, painted plates, woven and embroided items and the midget /minature horses, which live in the island and there are not taller than one meter. Skyrians are desperately trying to perpetuate their kind since only 150 remain from the 2,000 in existence thirty years ago. Skyros, the capital, is built around a hill on top of which the impressive Byzantine fortress dominates. The sight is spectacular.Outskirts: Linaria: The port of the island, by caique visit the famous caves of the island (appr. two hours away). The spectacle along with the trip will fascinate you. Aspri, picturesque coastal settlement (appr. 2 ½ miles from Skyros Town) here is the Achilli bay located; Atsitsa. It is worth a visit, since you go through one of the best pine forests of Skyros and you end up to remote pebbled coves.
Mayazia (or Yialos), a lovely coastal settlement; Pefkos very picturesque; Tris Boukes, idyllic bay in the north part of the island.
