General Information for Milos
The most southern of the western Cyclades is distinct not only for its volcanic terrain but its rich mineral deposits of its subsoil as well. Another singular characteristic is its butterfly shape. Unforseen images with intense interchanges await you at Milos, the island with a civilization comparable to that of Crete. The island’s fame was propaganded around the world when the Aphrodite statue - which is now at the Louvre - was excavated here in the 19th century. The island is also famous for its numerous (around 75) small and large beaches. Adamas which is regarded as the safest natural port of the Aegean - is especially picturesque. Milos Town or Plaka - the present capital - is built on the slope of the castle, over the sea - absolutely beautiful. In the northeast side of the island there is the modern resort of Pollonia or Apollonia and nearby there is the significant centre of the Minoan Period in Philakoti - where three villages were built successively. Next to Philakoti’s archeological site the extraordinary cave of Papafragas is located. The most noteworthy, however, monument of Milos are the Catacombs that can be visited at the village Tripiti (approx. 1 1/4 of a mile from the capital). They are regarded as the most important findings of the first years of Christianity. Due to the good tourist infrastructure, beautiful clear shores and significant monuments the number of visitors, attracted to the island, is steadily increasing. You will be fascinated going by rowboat through Glaronisia to Plaka. Vilalges worth-seeing: Klima near Tripiti - where the catacombs are located; Apollonia - the picturesque little fish-village will be your starting place to discover the charms of this lovely island and among other Emborios, where going by rowboat across from the port, you can spent endless hours of peace and quiet.

Seashores:
North of the capital there is Phiropotamos, beautiful little sandy beach, an incredibly peaceful retreat. From Athamas you could visit the shore of the village Lagatha, Hivatholimni (full of quahogs), Phatourena; Pollonia; Emborios; Provatas and others.
