General Information for Ios
Ios has - in recent years - become the meeting place of young people, from all over the world, determined to enjoy every moment on this tiny isle between Naxos, Sikinos and Santorini. Loud music everywhere welcomes visitors to the beautiful Ios Town, a typical cycladic landscape with lovely shores, picturesque windmills, ruins of a medieval castle, disseminated blue-domed churches, vineries and olive groves. Nightlife and the beaches are the two things that are most prominent for the majority of visitors and rightly so, since limited public transportation makes sight-seeing and touring the island rather difficult. According to tradition, Ios claims as her offspring Homer’s mother, some also assert that the epic poet himself died and was buried here and that his tomb has been excavated, but many archaeologists dispute that. The beautiful Ios Town is built on the site of the old town. The beauty of the local architecture is augmented by the meandering little streets which end up to some church, a backyard or a windmill. The entertainment starts early and continues till dawn. There are many tavernas and the bars outnumber the houses of the island. Enjoy yourself! Hurry though, the place is rapidly becoming crowded. The shores Mylopota (almost 2 miles of golden sand) and Meganari will stay in your memory forever. They are the best in Greece. Other beaches, northeast of Meganari are: Tris Klisies, Kalamos and Psathi. Near the bay there are: Kolitsani, Koumpara, Aghioi Anargyroi and Aghia Irene (the nudists’ beach).
Where to eat?
Entertainment starts early in Ios. Before you begin partying, visit one of the many tavernas and enjoy a good meal at: Meloi; Caprice; Pinochio and at Mylopotas try the fresh fish of Drakos and for something Mexican go to Armony.
