General Information for Kos

Kos The verdant island of Hippocrates - the father of medicine - offers a maltitude of natural attractions. Take a bike-ride and enjoy its unique color and beauty. Besides its physical appeal, Kos, avails mythical tradition, long history and temperate weather. The well-known therapeutic spa has become a pole of attraction for many visitors. Kos, is the third largest of the Dodecanese islands, after Rhodes and Karpathos. The lovely beaches of Kos will enchant you, the daily excursions to neighboring Nissyros, will absolutely astound you. Seventy miles of coastline - at the entrance of the Kerameikos Gulf - offer the island an unsurpassed grandeur. The shores of Kos accommodate many types of sea-turtles, the most prominent of all Caretta-Caretta. The castle of Ioanniton Knights dominates the town of Kos. Built at its entrance, next to the harbor, stands as a symbol of defensible architecture. The churches of Aghios Ioannis, Aghia Ekaterini, Aghios Nikitas the poor - among others - are set apart.

The plane-tree where under his shade - according to tradition - the most significant doctor of antiquity taught, will definitely impress you. Inside a cypress grove there is a very important complex, consisting of the Aschlepeion - the convalescent home of antiquity, built on four levels. Close by, there is a vast area that houses the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, where medical research and competition for achievement and discoveries of many doctors- from all over the world-along with the cultivation of the Hippocratic ideals, are awarded and thrive. At Liberty Square (Plateia Eleftherias), there is the Mosque of Yazi Hassan Passa, built in 1786.

Settlements worth-seeing:
Karthamena, ideal for a vacation by the sea. There you could take the boat to Nissyros; Antimachia, where the local-folk keep up the tradition of being bards and performers.

The houses here, are spread under the summit of the highest mountain of the island, Mt Dikaios. The view towards Kalymnos is incredible; Asphentiou, near Zia which is close to the beautiful shore of Tingaki; Mastihari, the tourist resort where you can connect with Kalymnos daily.

Seashores: Aghios Ioannis and Tingaki are the island’s prettiest, others include: Psalithi, Aghios Phokas - along the city - also north there are the shores of Paraskevas, Lambis and Pharos, beautiful beaches are on the southern side of the island as well as the entire area of Kephalos is wonderful for swimming.
