General Information for Astypalea

Astypalea Although the island belongs to the cluster of the Dodecanese Islands, nonetheless, it has may Cycladic elements (i.e., arid bushy locales, the acropolis surrounded by the Cycladic-architecture built houses, and so forth). Astypalea or Hora, the capital of the island, inhabited by 850 people, is built on a hill that enters the sea and forms two bays : the harbour and the Livadhi bay.

The hill is dominated by the castle/kastro, and its narrow pass is adorned by the nine well preserved windmills. Very clear, beautiful waters await you in Pera Yialos.

Besides the Venetian Castle of the Gouerini, one should also see among other sights, the Church of the Panaghia Portaitissa, the Municipal Library, the Monastery of St. John.
